ONBOARD Magazine, which covers the yachting and superyacht world, has run two features on Eyesea, introducing the project to an audience that spends its time in exactly the fragile marine environments the database needs eyes on.
The first cruise ship signs up
One feature recorded that the expedition vessel Ocean Nova became the first cruise ship to join the initiative. “The case for Eyesea is compelling,” said Richard Del Valle, president of Adventure Shipping, pointing out that very few people have access to the parts of the world such vessels visit.
Founder Graeme Somerville-Ryan welcomed the news with characteristic pragmatism: “It’s great to have them onboard, I hope the Ocean Nova finds nothing, but this is a problem that needs vigilance.”
A call to the yachting community
The second feature urged yacht owners, captains, and crews to use the app to report sightings, describing the platform’s growth past 20,000 geotagged images, the role of satellite spectrometry alongside human observation, and work with Aurora Expeditions to map and recover pollution in Antarctica and the Arctic.
