In January 2022 Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement published an account of why it champions the Eyesea initiative. Chairman David Furnival became an Eyesea ambassador in December 2020 and an officer in January 2021, and Nick Topham, Managing Director of BSM Germany, also serves as an ambassador.
Five vessels in the beta trial
Five BSM managed vessels joined a beta trial of the app in November 2021, with seafarers voluntarily logging photographic evidence of ocean pollution on their voyages.
“BSM joined because the concept aligns with our environmental protection core value and we have many seafarers who can contribute,” Furnival said. Topham added that the app empowers seafarers to be part of the solution, since most seafarers care deeply about the impact of pollution on marine wildlife.
The numbers at the time
The article recorded nearly 1,000 downloads of the app, with over 35,000 images and data points logged by users from more than 30 countries, and placed BSM’s commitment within its sustainability strategy built on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
