In August 2021 the Eyesea app formally launched on the Isle of Man at Port Erin. The island’s UNESCO Biosphere designation made it a natural testing ground, and local groups such as Beach Buddies and PlasticBusters planned to use the crowdsourced data to direct their cleanup work.

Backed by the Manx maritime community

Seven ambassadors and four Manx maritime companies committed their backing, including Bridgefort Maritime, Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, the Isle of Man Ship Registry, and Isle of Man Maritime.

“The support we have had for our initiative has been truly humbling,” said founder Graeme Somerville-Ryan at the launch. COO Catherine Robertshaw added that access to accurate and current pollution data greatly increases the options when it comes to cleaning up.

Data with a purpose

Collected observations feed into maritime charts to support ocean and coastal cleanups, plus scientific research into how behaviour change initiatives actually perform.
