When a container falls from a vessel, the first problem is knowing that it happened. Eyesea and EVI Safety Technologies developed a system that turns standard onboard camera footage into a structured incident record.

What the system is designed to see

Green Marine International and maritime trade coverage describe the system. It uses deck and bridge cameras to detect and count containers falling overboard or drifting near a vessel. The outputs include geotagged images and incident data that can support reporting.

The approach uses camera infrastructure already found on many ships, so no new hardware is needed. Detection software reviews the visual feed and records evidence when it identifies a possible loss.

From simulation to the water

Safety4Sea reported in December 2025 that simulation development and testing were complete, with operational vessel trials as the next step. Trials in real conditions will refine the system where it matters most: on working ships in real weather and real traffic.

The sooner a loss is known, the sooner it can be reported, tracked, and recovered.

The announcement travelled through maritime, logistics, safety, union, and specialist publications in several languages, a measure of how seriously the industry takes the problem of containers lost at sea.
