In August 2021, following six months of testing aboard commercial ships, recreational boats, and with community volunteers, the Eyesea app went live on Google Play and the Apple App Store. Splash247 reported the milestone.
Tested around the world
Beta testing was carried out by volunteers in the United States, Chile, the Netherlands, South Africa, Greece, Australia, India, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Germany, Turkey, and Hong Kong, people who gave up their time to walk beaches, record pollution, and recover it as part of the trial.
“Crowdsourcing maritime pollution data is the democratisation of environmental care initiatives,” said cofounder Graeme Somerville-Ryan. “The app is anonymous, we don’t know if the data is coming in from a bulk carrier, a superyacht, a container ship, a pilot boat, or a yacht.”
What came next
The next step was pushing the app out to member company vessels, building seafarer involvement, and growing the data library, the foundation for the maps and charts that support targeted cleanup action and evidence based policy decisions.
