The Tangaroa Alliance is a Pacific Island coalition formed to address climate change, plastic pollution, and biodiversity loss through Indigenous leadership and collaboration between islands. Born at the Pacific Leaders’ Summit in Rapa Nui in 2024, the alliance is registered as an official partnership on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals platform, and Eyesea is listed among its marine conservation and monitoring partners.
Islands working together
Partners include the Ariana Foundation Rapa Nui, the Galapagos Conservation Trust, the Galapagos National Park Directorate, the Pacific Plastics Science to Solutions Network, Ma’u Henua Rapa Nui, Island Conservation, Chile’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ecuador’s environmental ministry, among others.
The communities involved span roughly 30,000 residents of the Galapagos, 10,000 inhabitants of Rapa Nui, and 1,000 residents of the Juan Fernandez islands, alongside broader Pacific island populations.
What the alliance aims to deliver
The registered commitments run through 2030 and include circular economy pilot programs, training for Indigenous leaders in ocean governance, and a marine debris monitoring system by 2028, the deliverable where Eyesea’s pollution mapping work fits most directly. The partnership targets UN Sustainable Development Goals covering education, sustainable communities, responsible consumption, climate action, and life below water and on land.
